Lundy Bros Serves Up a Taste of Old Brooklyn in Red Hook
A Spring Bank Small Business Partner Story

Looking for a taste of old Brooklyn? Thanks to owner Sandra Snyder, the historical Lundy Bros restaurant is back in business, giving Red Hook a dining experience rooted in Brooklyn nostalgia.

History Behind Lundy’s

Founded by Frederick William “Irving” Lundy, Lundy Bros was once “F.W.I. Lundy Brothers Restaurant” and stood out as one of the most beloved and famous restaurants in New York City. The establishment attracted more than 15,000 patrons a day and was known for its fresh seafood served on the waterfront of Brooklyn’s Emmons Avenue in Sheepshead Bay.

At its peak, Lundy’s served a million patrons annually and for some time, was the highest grossing restaurant in America. Lundy’s remained a seafood icon until its doors closed in 1979, then reopened in the mid-1990s and closed once again in 2007. Today, Lundy’s is reborn in a brand new location on Red Hook’s waterfront.

The Iconic Brand Revival

As a community bank in New York and new residents of Red Hook, we were thrilled to learn about Lundy’s revival. The restaurant reopened this past December – right around the time we joined the Red Hook community! Lundy’s new Red Hook location is much smaller, seating about 100 people, compared to the original 2800-seat capacity in Sheepshead Bay. Despite the downsizing, Lundy’s is delivering the same amazing service and food it was known for in the early 20th century. Sandra is committed to revitalizing the spirit of the original Lundy Bros restaurant.

“We are working to bring the brand back alive in forms of recipes, especially the pies and biscuits that everyone knew and loved,” says Sandra.

With Sandra’s experience in business management, the rebirth of Lundy’s came naturally. It also hit home in many ways – the old Lundy’s is where they had one of their first dates and the new location is just blocks from their longtime residence in Gerritsen Beach.

“Working in the wine world, we went out to dinner a lot. Dining out 6 to 7 nights a week helped us understand what worked and didn’t work. We saw a new trajectory, and we didn’t like the move toward cutting edge, avant-garde, aka foam-on-your-plate fine dining. We wanted to create an experience with real food and a place our customers can rely on,” says Sandra.

The New Lundy’s Experience

The revamped Lundy Bros menu offers a taste of the past and present with throwback recipes and new dishes curated by Sandra and Mark’s team. Diners can enjoy the classic “Lundy’s” clam bisque on its own or as part of their new three-course menu “the Shore Dinner,” which offers a choice of seafood starter, fish, chicken, or lobster main, and butterscotch sundae for dessert.

Looking ahead, Sandra hopes to transform Lundy’s into a year round hotspot that’s more than just a place for special occasions.

“People know Lundy’s for special events, but it doesn’t have to be just that. We can be your casual Monday or Wednesday night. Create your own rotation of restaurants in Red Hook; we’re happy to be part of it,” says Sandra.

Small Business Partner with Spring Bank

Lundy Bros has been a delightful addition to Red Hook and we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming them as small business bank account customers at our new Red Hook branch! We’re also excited to work together as neighbors to make a lasting impact in the community.

“Spring Bank treats us the same way we would treat our own customers. They’ve already shown us their personal touch,” says Sandra. “Hospitality is for all businesses and Spring Bank understands this. They treat us like their first priority.”

We’re the first bank in Red Hook after ten years, so establishing trust with Red Hook locals is a priority. We owe our success thus far to our wonderful community and look forward to growing with customers like Lundy Bros as their small business partner.

“If the neighborhood succeeds, we all succeed,” Sandra emphasizes.
