Students @ Family Life Academy Charter School Learn Healthy Life Skills

This is important. In last week’s State of the Borough address, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. shared that the Bronx is 62nd out of New York State’s 62 counties in terms of health!

One way to get back on track? Healthy eating habits. What could be better than good food, cooked well, and shared with friends and family? Not much, especially when it’s healthy and delicious. That’s why this February we joined our friends at Family Life Academy Charter School (FLACS), to support the Healthy Hearts Cooking Club. Chef Bennett teaches students the importance of fresh ingredients and nutritious recipes. And his students learn the skills to make their own meals that are really, really, really hard to resist.

The Cooking Club is a long standing program at FLACS, and this month partners from the local food industry have joined us to share insights and recipes with our FLACS scholars. Partners include: Rebecca Scott, Founder of Sustainable Snacks (Mountain Morsels); George Carney, Founder of Poor Man’s Kitchen; King Phojanakong, Owner and Chef of Kuma Inn and the Chef behind The Bronx Greenmarket Hot Sauce; Randal Wilcox, Founder of Comer Más; and B. Blossom Catering.

The month concludes with a private dinner for friends and family prepared by students this coming Friday, February 27. We’re excited to see what the students have learned and enjoy some downtime with our Bronx neighbors and local businesses. And we look forward to working together for a healthy Bronx.
